Verdiva halts oral ecnoglutide weight-maintenance trial, citing business decision

UK-based Verdiva Bio has terminated a Phase II trial testing once-weekly oral ecnoglutide (VRB-101) for weight maintenance following injectable GLP-1 therapy after enrolling eight participants. The sponsor attributed the termination to a business decision and said it was not based on safety findings, according to the ClinicalTrials.gov record.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study tested three weekly oral dose regimens in adults with obesity or overweight and weight-related comorbidities. Participants had previously received at least six months of injectable semaglutide and/or tirzepatide and achieved documented weight loss. The study began in June 2026 and was designed to identify a dose that could maintain that weight loss after switching to oral treatment.

The registry lists actual enrollment of eight participants but provides no efficacy or adverse-event results. The termination therefore does not establish whether VRB-101 succeeded or failed to maintain weight loss.

VRB-101 is an investigational oral formulation of the GLP-1 receptor agonist ecnoglutide. A separate injectable formulation developed by Sciwind Biosciences received Chinese approval for type 2 diabetes in January 2026 and chronic weight management in March. Those approvals do not cover the oral candidate.

The termination applies to this weight-maintenance study and does not establish that the broader VRB-101 program has been discontinued. Verdiva’s website continues to list the oral candidate as being in Phase II development for obesity.
