Genomics pioneer J. Craig Venter, Ph.D., announced the launch of Diploid Genomics, Inc. (DGI), a new advanced genomics analytics company designed to develop next-generation discovery and diagnostics tools for complex and deadly diseases. The company opened with seed backing from Healthier Capital, a health-tech venture capital firm that joined as a co-founder and sole external investor.

DGI is launching as a platform with the aim of combining advanced AI models, cutting-edge genomic sequencing technologies, high-resolution imaging, and comprehensive health data to generate more precise diagnostic insights for life science companies, health systems, researchers, and patients. The approach is intended to improve predictability and actionability of health outcomes, both for disease prevention and treatment development.

The company launches with access to sequencing infrastructure from PacBio and Oxford Nanopore, deep proprietary genomics and imaging data from the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI), and select collaborators, providing it with significant early technical advantages. DGI also plans to build its own sequencing center in San Diego and pursue CLIA certification to offer to provide AI-enhanced, next generation clinical grade sequencing.

Strategic partnerships are reportedly already being explored with leading academic medical centers, AI organizations, and life sciences companies.

DGI was formed as a spinoff of JCVI, with Venter in a leadership role alongside experts in imaging and computational sciences. The JCVI itself was originally established by Venter in 2006 as a non-profit institute to conduct research in synthetic biology. Venter previously set up The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) while working at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and played a significant role in early efforts to sequence the human genome. The JCVI published the first diploid human genome – the genome of a single individual (J. Craig Venter himself) – in which both sets of chromosomes were sequenced, in 2007.
