Iambic, Takeda form new AI-driven collaboration worth over USD 1.7b

US-based Iambic Therapeutics and Japanese pharmaceutical giant Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. (TSE: 4502) announced a multi-year technology and discovery collaboration to design and develop new small-molecule medicines. The partnership will leverage Iambic’s AI-driven discovery platform to accelerate Takeda’s pipeline in high-priority therapeutic areas.

Details regarding the specific biological targets or the exact number of drug programs were not disclosed. Under the terms of the agreement, Iambic will receive upfront payments, research cost coverage, and technology access fees. The deal includes success-based development and commercial milestone payments that could exceed USD 1.7 billion, in addition to tiered royalties on net sales of any products resulting from the collaboration.

The collaboration establishes a rapid development model aimed at compressing traditional drug discovery timelines—potentially reducing the path to clinical trials from six years to less than two. Iambic will utilize its “Design-Make-Test-Analyze” cycle, integrating its NeuralPLexer and Enchant AI models with its automated wet lab capabilities. Takeda will gain specific access to the NeuralPLexer model to predict protein-ligand complexes, while both companies work to advance a select set of small-molecule programs initially focused on oncology and gastrointestinal and inflammatory diseases.

Deal background

Takeda’s partnership with Iambic follows a strategic shift in late 2024, where the company narrowed its R&D focus to three core modalities: small molecules, biologics, and antibody-drug conjugates. This deal marks Takeda’s latest major investment in AI, following a similar USD 1 billion plus “biobucks” agreement with Nabla Bio in 2025.

Iambic Therapeutics (formerly Entos) has rapidly emerged as a key technology partner for big pharma, recently securing an oversubscribed USD 100 million financing round in late 2025. The company has already established research collaborations with NVIDIA, Lundbeck, and Jazz Pharmaceuticals, the latter of which involves evaluating Iambic’s lead clinical asset, IAM1363, in combination therapies for HER2-positive breast cancer.

Iambic’s internal pipeline currently features assets in oncology and neurology, with its lead program IAM1363 already in Phase I/Ib clinical trials.
