Novo Nordisk A/S (CPH: NOVO B), the Denmark-headquartered cardiometabolic and rare disease company, announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to integrate the artificial intelligence company’s capabilities across Novo Nordisk’s global operations, spanning drug discovery, manufacturing, supply chain, and commercial functions. The collaboration is molecule-agnostic and targets no specific pipeline asset, instead functioning as an enterprise-wide AI infrastructure deal intended to compress timelines from research to patient. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The agreement covers Novo Nordisk’s operations across approximately 170 countries and is structured with data protection, governance frameworks, and human oversight provisions built into the terms. Pilot programs are set to launch across research and development, manufacturing, and commercial operations, with full integration targeted by the end of 2026.
The operational model assigns OpenAI the role of technology and capability provider, supplying its most advanced AI tools alongside workforce upskilling and AI literacy programs directed at Novo Nordisk’s approximately 68,800 employees globally. Novo Nordisk contributes domain expertise, internal datasets, and operational infrastructure across its therapeutic areas, which are centered on diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and rare conditions.
On the drug discovery side, the partnership is designed to apply AI capabilities to the analysis of complex biological and chemical datasets, identification of drug candidates, and acceleration of hypothesis testing. On the operational side, applications extend to manufacturing process optimization, supply chain efficiency, and corporate functions. The breadth of intended deployment across these distinct domains reflects the enterprise-scale scope of the arrangement rather than a narrowly scoped research collaboration.
Novo Nordisk president and CEO Mike Doustdar stated that integrating AI into everyday work enables analysis of datasets at a scale previously not feasible, identification of patterns that were not previously visible, and faster hypothesis testing, with the stated goal of discovering and bringing therapies to market more quickly. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted the collaboration is intended to help Novo Nordisk accelerate scientific discovery and run global operations more efficiently.
