The University of Virginia (UVA) announced the signing of a Master Research Collaboration Agreement with global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to streamline and accelerate pre-clinical research partnerships across a range of therapeutic areas.
The agreement creates a standardized framework and operational pathways designed to cut administrative time and reduce barriers to launching collaborative pre-clinical studies between AstraZeneca’s R&D teams and UVA’s schools, departments, and core research facilities. It spans oncology, immunology, cardiovascular and metabolic science, and infectious disease research, aiming to boost translational discovery across disciplines.
Under the new framework, projects will benefit from aligned compliance and data stewardship processes, faster contracting, and enhanced engagement of UVA’s advanced research infrastructure, including high-throughput screening, advanced imaging, computational modeling and biostatistics.
The first initiative launching under the agreement in 2026 will target pre-clinical research on Clostridioides difficile, leveraging UVA laboratories and core facilities to support exploratory studies and pipeline programs.
UVA leadership described the deal as a significant boost to the university’s research enterprise, enabling faculty and trainees to collaborate more efficiently with industry partners while safeguarding academic values like transparency, integrity, and publication rights. AstraZeneca emphasized that the agreement strengthens its ability to translate academic discoveries into innovative medicines by combining UVA’s scientific breadth with its global R&D capabilities.
The Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology will play a central role, contributing expertise in nanotechnology, biologics engineering, AI-driven drug design and translational science to the partnership. The collaboration also supports workforce development and offers training opportunities for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and research staff embedded within UVA’s academic mission.
AstraZeneca pursues a broad range of academic partnerships spanning early-stage discovery, translational research, and population-level health initiatives, with structured collaborations spanning the US, UK, Europe, and China. These include lung cancer screening programs with the University of California and University of Maryland. AstraZeneca also employs an Open Innovation model, providing academic researchers access to compounds, data and other support, reflecting the company’s strategy of embedding external science and university ecosystems into its R&D pipeline.
