Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research to expand its NEULARK Phase II trial of NEU-411 into Israel, activating four clinical sites across Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Haifa. The award reflects sustained philanthropic investment in genetically stratified Parkinson's disease trials, where patient identification remains a central operational challenge.
NEULARK is evaluating NEU-411, an oral, brain-penetrant LRRK2 kinase inhibitor, in patients with early-stage Parkinson's disease who are prospectively identified as having LRRK2-driven disease. The trial targets both carriers of gain-of-function LRRK2 mutations — estimated at roughly 2% of Parkinson's patients — and a broader group with single-nucleotide polymorphisms predicted to drive LRRK2 overactivity, which Neuron23 estimates may account for up to 30% of idiopathic Parkinson's cases. The 52-week, randomized, placebo-controlled study is designed to enroll approximately 150 participants globally, with the primary endpoint measured via a digital biomarker score derived from smartphone-based monitoring of motor and non-motor symptoms.
Israel's relevance to this strategy is partly epidemiological: the country has a well-documented higher prevalence of LRRK2 mutations, particularly among Ashkenazi Jewish populations, making it a strategically important recruitment geography for genetically enriched trials.
