Munich-based mbiomics GmbH has completed a third closing of its Series A round, bringing total financing to EUR 30 million (USD 35.1 million). The latest tranche added EUR 12 million to the round, with participation from existing investors MIG Fonds and Bayern Kapital. The company develops live biotherapeutic products targeting severe and chronic diseases, with a lead oncology candidate approaching clinical-stage development.
The capital will be directed toward IND-enabling pharmacological data sets and GMP development and manufacturing activities. No new investors were named in connection with the third closing. The financing positions mbiomics to advance its lead candidate, MBX-116, toward a planned Phase Ib study in second-line advanced melanoma, which the company has indicated is targeted to begin in 2027.
MBX-116 is being developed as a co-therapy alongside immune checkpoint inhibitors. The rationale draws on clinical evidence suggesting that gut microbiome composition can influence patient response rates to checkpoint blockade in oncology settings. The company is focusing initially on second-line melanoma as the entry indication, with the broader pipeline potentially extending into autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases where microbiome modulation may be relevant.
The company's platform centers on the design and manufacture of defined microbial consortia — collections of live bacterial strains formulated as oral therapeutics. This approach is positioned as a scalable alternative to fecal microbiota transplants, which have demonstrated clinical activity across multiple indications but present limitations in standardization and reproducibility. mbiomics combines AI and machine learning for consortia design with proprietary analytical technology and co-cultivation capabilities, with the stated goal of producing pharmaceutical-grade live biotherapeutic products at scale.
