ReEmerge exits stealth with USD 37m Series A to advance TBI brain stimulation study

Minnesota-based ReEmerge, Inc. has launched from stealth with an oversubscribed USD 37 million Series A financing to advance an implantable deep brain stimulation system for chronic cognitive impairment following traumatic brain injury (TBI). U.S. Venture Partners (USVP) and Santé co-led the round, with participation from Oxford Science Enterprises, 415 Capital, IAG Capital Partners, The Vertical Group, and Dendrion Ventures.

The proceeds will support an upcoming clinical study of ReEmerge's Cognitive Network Restoration Therapy (CNRT) in chronic moderate-to-severe TBI, as well as technology development, expanded clinical and regulatory operations, and preparation of the platform for potential use in additional indications.

CNRT uses implanted electrodes to stimulate neural networks centered on the central thalamus, a brain region involved in attention, arousal, and executive function. The approach is intended to increase activity in viable but underactive neural circuits following brain injury rather than bypass damaged pathways.

ReEmerge plans a prospective, single-arm, multicenter study of CNRT under clinical trial identifier NCT07730099, enrolling up to 40 patients with chronic moderate-to-severe TBI. The study will assess cognitive and functional outcomes following central thalamic stimulation.

ReEmerge’s technology builds on academic work by Nicholas Schiff and colleagues at Weill Cornell Medicine, Stanford University, and the University of Utah. The Center for Technology Licensing at Weill Cornell licensed foundational intellectual property to ReEmerge. In a Phase I feasibility study published in 2023, five participants with chronic TBI who completed treatment all improved on the study's primary cognitive measure following central thalamic deep brain stimulation, with gains ranging from approximately 15% to 52%.

The company said it ultimately aims to develop CNRT as a treatment for persistent cognitive impairment in patients who remain disabled years after an initial brain injury.
