Ono Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Aitia, Inc. have announced a drug discovery partnership covering neurological diseases, under which Aitia will deploy its causal AI platform to build virtual patient models and identify novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers. Ono receives exclusive worldwide option rights to research, develop, and commercialize drug candidates directed at targets generated through the collaboration. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Aitia's contribution centers on its Gemini Digital Twin (GDT) platform, which is built using the company's proprietary REFS causal AI technology. The platform integrates patient clinical and omics data to construct virtual patient models that reflect individual disease characteristics, then applies causal inference — rather than correlation-based analysis — to identify which molecular changes drive disease. The company said the approach is particularly suited to neurological diseases, where complex interactions among genetic, developmental, neural network, immune, and environmental factors have historically limited target identification using conventional AI methods.

Ono holds an exclusive worldwide option right to take forward any drug candidates arising from targets identified by Aitia, covering research, development, manufacturing, and commercialization. No upfront payment, milestone values, royalty rates, or total deal value were disclosed in the announcement.

In March 2026, Ono expanded its collaboration with Congruence Therapeutics, a Montreal-based computational drug discovery company, to cover small molecule modulators in neurology and immunology, following an initial oncology-focused agreement signed in December 2024. Aitia, for its part, has established a series of comparable deals using the same GDT platform: a September 2024 oncology collaboration with Orion Corporation, under which Aitia was eligible to receive more than USD 10 million per drug target plus tiered single-digit royalties on net sales, and an October 2024 expansion of its existing multi-year partnership with Servier to cover glioma brain cancers. The Ono agreement fits Aitia’s broader model of using GDT to identify targets while pharma partners retain downstream development and commercialization rights.
